The temple at Yamunotri is dedicated to Goddess Yamuna,who is considered the daughter of the Sun God, Surya and the twin sister of Yama, (the god of death.) Yamunotri Dham is the first stop in the pilgrimage.According to Hindu mythology, Yamuna descended from the heavens to cleanse the sins of humanity. People who visit this temple believe that they can find freedom from their sins through their devotion here.
The Yamunotri temple sits way up high at 3,185 meters in the Garhwal region’s western side. Maharani Gularia of Jaipur built it in the 19th century, but it got knocked down twice in this century and then rebuilt. They also say that a wise man named Sage Asit Muni lived there long ago. He used to bathe in both the Ganga and Yamuna rivers. When he got old and couldn’t go to Gangotri, which is another holy place, a stream of the Ganga river started flowing near the Yamuna river just for him
